As usual, comments, thoughts, software, whatever are welcomed.

I saw a place selling the manual for this. The software might be on
driverguide.com, but the account I had is no longer active and I'm not
so sure I want to sign up for another.

Not sure of the card-ID yet.

Well, it's free. Had a look around Driverguide and turned up
Scan_Man_256.zip (4.7 MB)

I put it on ftp://ps2supersite.homedns.org/incoming/jelte.roelfsema/ in
stead of mailing it.

It is either 62AC or 6DAC, but you have to ID it to know which one you
exactly have. There are some differences.

I have two Logitech ScanMan sets with two scanners and three cards. The
first set is 6DAC, MCA, Logitech ScanMan Plus: this is 6DAC and does 32
dithered grey scale colors. The other set is ScanMan 256 and does 256 true
grey scale colors, the card is ISA. The third card, ISA again, supports RGB
colors, but can be used with the monochrome scanner heads too.

The scanner coming with ScanMan Plus is calibrated for b/w, it is very well
suited for OCR. The scanner head coming with ScanMan 256 is calibrated for
grey scale images, it does pretty good b/w image scans.

I have manuals for both sets, both in German. Software too, DOS and Windows.
ScanMan Plus had the DOS program PaintShow, looked like an early Mac paint
program, you can save images only in TIFF and BMP perhaps. ScanMan 256 came
with a Win 3.x program FotoTouch Color, really not bad, you can save TIFF,
JPG and BMP.

For DOS/Win, you need the DOS device driver, IIRC, HHSCAND.SYS. I've seen it
for OS/2 too, perhaps I even have the code of the driver or some sample app.

I've been long playing wit the idea of making up a Win9x driver for the
Logitech scanner, because I personally like it very much. It is small,
handy, and with OCR, you can quickly scan code from books and articles. The
MCA variant, ScanMan Plus, with the dithered colors is exceptional for
artistic effects, it waits to be discovered. It gives you those old,
nostalgic newspaper image art.

Software: do not ask me right now where the floppies are. Remind me at some
time later to look for them.

P.S. Go to mcabase and click on About, it is on the blue bar at the bottom
of the page. The picture of the whirled cat you see there has been scanned
with Logitech ScanMan 256 from a color photo and then postprocessed with
FotoTouch and PaintShop Pro, in 1998.

I had the 256 greyscale in ISA flavor. Did a credible job stitching
together scans, as I recall. OCR was fair.

Older OCR software is easily irritated by greyscale levels. As said, the
head of the ScanMan Plus, the MCA variant, performs better, it is a true b/w
scanner. I've tested both heads. You can also save the scan and feed it to
another OCR software.
