Hello!

There are numerous posts about PS/2 ESDI, but none of them really answer
the question raised by my problem.

Problem:

50Z with 120MB Western Digital ESDI drive. Scandisk reveals bad sectors
toward end of disk.

Would like to LLF disk to map these bad sectors before DOS has a chance
to encounter them. Attempting to LLF the disk via the reference disk
fails, as it says:

The manufacturer's defect configuration area is unreadable or invalid.
Replace the ESDI Fixed Disk Controller.
Suspect Drive.

Thought I would need to do the DEBUG hack on LLFORMAT.COM. Did that,
same error message.

Question:

Where do I go from here? Nowhere?

TIA,

I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me.

Oh, wait! You are asking a real question! Find another DBA ESDI drive...

Hi!

I'd tend to think that if the drive plugs into the 50Z's bus riser
(hidden fourth slot) that you'd be in the clear as far as using IBM's
utility to LLF the drive. (IBM did have some OEMs produce drives for
them. I've seen some Seagate 60, 45 and 30MB drives around for the
Models 50Z and 30-286.)

If the drive isn't working, you should find another one. The 120MB
drive seems to be somewhat common.

FM, Disk Manager "Ontrack Systems", early version used to
be included with Seagate and Quantum OEM HD. I had few
versions myself but all on 5.25" media, where are they?
that s a different story.
